What is the Sound of One GenXer Stumbling?

By Seamus Anthony

Well the bad news is that I got slapped by Stumble Upon on Monday for trying to promote this (sadly overlooked) post and learned that it is uncool with them to promote your own stuff (which I think is crap, but anyway …) and the good news is I have a new article up at PickTheBrain.com called 7 Reasons to Set Fire to Your Career Plan.

So seeing as I can’t do it myself – feel free join all those who have already dugg it or stumbled it (but only if you like it of course).

In other news I just read an article which kind of compliments the above mentioned article – and although it’s not a new post, it was good timing for me to read it today because Steve and I are busy blasting out some new projects which we will be able to share with you very soon.

That’s it for tonight, back with more in a jiffy, what what …

P.S. if you can’t be bothered scrolling through all that info on the post about ‘Stumbling without getting slapped’, the post author claims that the way StumbleUpon prefers you to promote yourself is direct to your Stumble friends by way of the “Send to” feature in the toolbar. I have been doing this and it is kind of like spamming, so I have been asking all my ‘friends’ (my we use that word casually these days don’t we?) if they mind me sending them my articles. I am getting some definite “yes” answers, but the silence is deafening from the rest, the trouble is now I have to keep some kind of list of who said yes and blah blah blah … yet another example of how complicated life seems to have become. (Fade to black to the sound of grumbling GenXer shuffling off to bed, tripping over a plastic toy panda in the dark, and swearing in a whisper through clenched teeth so as not to wake the sleeping child…)

  1. Hey Friend! Thanks for the linkback!… I know it really stinks that folks cannot submit their articles, but it is not your fault! It is the collective fault of the spammers that did NOTHING but submit their own articles. You couldn’t get THESE spammers to even thumbs up a post to save their lives. When spammers find a loophole, then exploit it, ya gotta know that the day will come when the company will have to close it, it is just common sense to expect it. But like every other time a loophole is closed, it cuts off the heads of all the innocent who either “weren’t abusing it, but using it here and there.” Or those “that didn’t even know the dern thing existed!” Many we talked to were furious, but we found the majority of rage was coming from the abusers. (Mad they got caught is all) LOL

The send to option works well. Those people are on your friends list for just that reason, to be friends, and network. If they ignore, never answer back, you don’t see them at least thumbing up posts you send them? Cut them off, find new friends. SU friends list is not a “collect as many names as possible to win”. Nope, it is about collecting the list of friends that want to help, and that expect you to help them, when they need it.

Wheat from the chaff my friend…. Cull that herd… Friends that work together, stay on my list forever. ๐Ÿ™‚ The bums get the bums rush…

  2. What did they expect? You are REBEL Zen. Does that not imply a bit of doing it your own way? ๐Ÿ™‚
Glad to know that. I have been recommending my own, as I find it very difficult to ask others to do it.
I am the same in life…so no big mystery here. ๐Ÿ™‚ Saw your article at PTB. I figured …how many SA can there be?

  3. Thanks for the comments guys. Very helpful.

@Dr Algorithm (I presume?) Thanks for your help over the last couple of days and I am right now checking out all you have to offer at the Linback project

@Maya – I do have a twitter account http://twitter.com/seamusanthony – since yesterday I am starting to think about how to work with it to promote posts. Please go ahead and befriend me (or follow as they call it, which sounds weird to me).

@Harmony – yes, better roll with the punches and stop thumbing up your own stuff.

I am actually pretty new to using social media to connect with others and promote stuff. It’s already been a fast learning curve but I am coming up with some awesome, although probably not revolutionary, ideas about how it can work well for you. Please feel free to email me at Seamus AT rebel zen DOT com to join with us on our efforts to be of mutual benefit.

Anyway – this is all right off topic and we will be back with our regularly scheduled Rebel Zen insights tomorrow. Steve has been desperately coding his little bottom off and I have been writing up a storm for some freelance copywriting work and also working on a new e-book we are releasing very soon, maybe even next week. See you soon.

  4. Twitter is one way of promoting your own posts. Creating your own mailing list for that purpose is another one. You are a rebel, find a way that suits your needs.

  5. Hi Bengt! Yes! The mailing list seems like an obvious choice doesn’t it? While we are on the topic – if you are new here or you haven’t yet – why not go up the top right of this page and join our very occasional mailing list and get the free e-book goodness for your efforts? I’ve had at least one person say it was quite good ๐Ÿ™‚
